About
Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's medieval capital from the 11th to 13th centuries, and its well-preserved ruins form one of the island's most rewarding historical experiences. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient city is best explored by bicycle along shaded paths between towering dagobas, ornate palace ruins, and the magnificent Gal Vihara — four colossal Buddha figures carved from a single granite face with breathtaking artistry and detail. Unlike the more spread-out Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is compact enough to explore in a full day, and its combination of beautiful ruins, resident wildlife (including monkeys and water monitor lizards), and peaceful rural setting makes it truly special.
