Whale Watching in Mirissa: Everything You Need to Know

Mirissa offers some of the world's best whale watching, with blue whales regularly spotted just kilometres offshore. Here's how to plan the perfect trip.

The waters off Mirissa are among the most reliable places on earth to see blue whales in the wild — the largest animals ever to have lived on our planet.

Best Time to Go The whale watching season runs from November through April. December through March is peak season, when sperm whales, spinner dolphins, and occasionally orcas are also regularly spotted.

Choosing a Boat Choose a licensed boat with a marine biologist on board. Avoid operators that approach whales too closely. Boats depart at 6am from Mirissa harbour and typically return by noon.

What to Bring Sunscreen, a windproof layer, sea-sickness tablets, and a dry bag for your camera. Even if whales prove elusive, spinner dolphins almost always accompany the boats and the sunrise over the Indian Ocean from a small boat is worth getting up early for.
